iPad Apps
I gave you my initial review of the iPad 2 back in June. I'll save you from having to read it. I love it. It's, by far, the best gadget I've ever owned. I just bought an iPhone 4S and... it sits on my desk at home because I can't keep my greedy hands off the iPad. I have a huge iMac, as well... but it, too, sits and gathers dust (except when I'm writing blog posts like this one). Why? Because the iPad is fucking awesome, that's why. No joke. Why use a phone when it's so much easier to read on the iPad? Why confine yourself to a desktop when you can sit, comfortably, on the couch and... just relax? It's a laptop, gaming device, phone (yes... you can actually make video phone calls - not just with FaceTime, but with Skype and Tango... for calls to non-iPhone users), bookstore, newsstand, sketchpad, iPod, mini TV, and GPS tracker... all in one. I'll let you in on a little secret... I rarely surf the Web on it. Why? Safari is actually quite good (as is Dolphin), but what makes the iPad special (and unique) are the amazing apps.
All my favorite sites have custom apps that are a joy to use - much more so than just going to a bland site. They're interactive, fun. Facebook, Mint, TED, Food Network, Twitter, The Weather Channel, Craigslist, Dropbox, IMDB, Instapaper, and more. Hell... even USA Today's app is pretty cool. Everything is a joy on this device - from watching HBO and Cinemax to playing a KORG keyboard. And Flipboard. Oh... how I love my Flipboard. They say people fall in love with Apple products because of the user experience. I think it's true... and I think it's why I don't use Android devices. I have a healthy respect for Google (I still think Google+ could work), but I'm not a 16-year-old kid in my Mom's basement who wants to hack my device so it can run free/cheap apps. I don't want stuff that's interesting, but not ready for primetime. I want a polished UI. I want a rich, dynamic experience. I want a gadget so easy to use that it makes something as mundane as checking the weather kind of fun. That's the iPad. If you don't have one, wait. It's almost the end of the year and they'll probably be coming out with version 3 in February/March. Get one then, though. Really. It's like being a kid again.
Some favorite new apps...
