The Verse
Racing in the Street Sample by TWBuddha
I've been thinking about how certain verses stand out in memory. You know what I'm talking about. Think back to when you were young. One song. One verse. Stop. Rewind. Play. You did it over and over again. The singer was saying something that echoed exactly how you felt (or how you wanted to feel). You probably even do it today. The song never has a chance to finish because you only want to hear that particular verse. Well... this was one of those sections for me.
It's the third verse of Springsteen's "Racing in the Street" from Darkness on the Edge of Town. I wanted to be this guy. I wanted the girl and the car. I wanted to steal her away, rescue her. It's incredibly poetic and one of the big reasons I got into his music in the first place. It's also painfully honest. The narrator doesn't save her. In fact, she "hates for just being born." Killer line. Still... as is typical in Springsteen's world, they hope to find salvation in the end.
