Mac vs PC
I hated my Mac when I first bought it. I mean... I thought it was a thing of beauty, for sure. 24" wide. Sleek aluminum enclosure. Gorgeous resolution. One unit/cord. Wireless keyboard and mouse. The applications where simply amazing... especially for working with videos. The dashboard was cool. I liked the Mac. I just... I struggled in being able to use it. There were too many differences between a Mac and a PC. The screens moved around. I couldn't do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete. There were Windows apps that weren't available for Mac. I couldn't access sites that only worked with Internet Explorer. Keyboard shortcuts were different. It was just too unfamiliar. Everything changed, though, a few months later. I finally saw the light.
Once it clicked, I realized the reason it was so "strange" was that it just works. It's a much better user experience. I found out that I could install Windows via some virtualization software and, if I have to, I can run Windows side-by-side... drag and drop files from one desktop to another. I went through several PC's over the years. Crashes. Viruses. I've had no issues with my Mac. I don't have to run virus software as hackers don't write viruses for a Mac. If I'm in Windows and I get one, it can't carry over to Leopard (two different languages). I've also come to realize that Mac has some of the best apps on the market - Screenflow, Pixelmator, iMovie, GarageBand and more. iWork (Apple's version of Office) is awesome. Pages is better than Word. Keynote is better than PowerPoint. You can open Office docs and save as such.
It's frustrating when I'm at work and I want to do something that I can on my Mac, but can't on my work PC. If you're thinking of getting an iMac, but you're worried that it's going to be too different... it will be. It's going to take awhile to get used to it, but once you do... you'll wonder why it took you so long to come around. Some will argue that Mac's are just popular because they're "cool"; no... they're popular because Apple makes great products and the people who buy them (like me) spread the word. If you're turned off by the price tag, fair enough... but how long is that PC going to last before you're back at Best Buy looking for a replacement? Macs cost more because they're better machines. They make the hardware. They make the software. Their customer service is the best in the industry. No need to defrag. No need to set up firewalls and run virus scans. No need to send it in for repairs. Trust me... you'll love it.
